South Sudan General Medical Council Launches Medical Council Website and Swears In Over 250 Health Professionals

JUBA – April 16, 2026 – The South Sudan General Medical Council (SSGMC) officially launched its government domain website, ssgmc.gov.ss, during a ceremony held on Thursday at the Imperial Plaza Hotel in Juba.

The event coincided with the oath-taking ceremony for more than 251 medical professionals, including doctors, pharmacists, dentists, and specialists .

Presiding over the ceremony, the National Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Dr. Martin Elia Lomurö, administered the oath to the new practitioners and used the platform to issue a firm warning regarding unlicensed medical facilities. Lomurö threatened to shut down hospitals and clinics operating without proper accreditation, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to professional standards amid a proliferation of unregulated facilities, particularly in the capital .

In his address to the new medics, Lomurö stressed the importance of compassion alongside competence, stating that "friendliness itself is the first line of treatment" and urged the professionals to remain humble and sensitive to patients' feelings .

The newly launched website is expected to enhance transparency and accountability within the health sector. According to officials, the online platform will allow the public to verify licensed practitioners and enable health professionals to apply for registration and licensing digitally .

Despite these advancements, the SSGMC acknowledged ongoing operational challenges, including limited office space and insufficient funding, which continue to affect its regulatory mandate .
